TikTok is a social media platform that's only been around since 2016. It's basically a place where you can create and share short videos with friends, family, and the world (if you have the settings set to public). You can create short comedy sketches, sing along to your favorite songs, show off your dance moves—the sky is the limit! If you're not familiar with TikTok yet, it might sound like a strange concept. But if you've ever posted something on Snapchat or Instagram Stories or YouTube, then it'll be pretty easy to pick up. Here are 10 things only those of us who've used TikTok will understand:

1. You "Have a TikTok Problem"

TikTok is a popular app that is used to make short videos, and it's also used as an adjective to describe someone with an addiction to using the app (or "a TikTok problem"). The phrase isn't used exclusively by people who've downloaded the app; some may have even heard it from their parents or grandparents when talking about their own children's use of the app. This can be confusing for those unfamiliar with its usage, but rest assured that soon it won't be—because if there's one thing I know about TikTok users, it's that they're always eager to share their experiences!

2. You Spend More Time on TikTok Than You Care to Admit

  • You spend more time on TikTok than you care to admit.

  • It's addictive, and it's not just because of the short videos and funny jokes. The fact that TikTok is so accessible makes it easy to get sucked into watching other people's videos and posting your own content.

  • It all comes down to one word: emotions. While there are plenty of reasons why people use social media platforms like Instagram or Facebook (e.g., connecting with friends), those aren't really what make these sites popular or addictive in the way that they are today; instead, it's their ability to make us feel things we don't usually experience in our everyday lives—like joy or sadness—that keeps us coming back for more content again and again until late at night when we should be sleeping.

  • One example: When I first started using TikTok last year, I was pretty much only watching cat-themed videos because I'm a big fan of felines but soon realized how many other kinds of content there was out there waiting for me! Since then I've discovered some amazing new talents like @muchacha_in_love who makes beautiful art pieces while singing along; @jessicaadamsart whose paintings are both cleverly themed as well as skillfully executed; @melaniesunset whose comedic skits rival any daytime TV show episode ever created! The list goes on...and on...and...

3. You're Guilty of Singing Along to the App, No Matter Where You Are

If you've ever used TikTok, you know that one of its endearing qualities is how it makes you feel like you're with friends even when you're all alone. What better way to feel connected than by singing along with them in the car, shower and bathroom? To sing along to other people's videos on TikTok means that you're part of a community of people who share a love for music—and no matter where they are in the world, they'll always be able to find each other through their shared passion for songs!

4. It's Distracting AF During Your Workday

TikTok is an amazing way to procrastinate, pass the time, and make your workday go by faster—but it also has a tendency to distract you from what you're supposed to be doing. In fact, one of the most common TikToks I see are people singing along to their favorite songs at their desks (usually in a very off-key fashion). This isn't necessarily bad—in fact, it's pretty funny! But if your boss catches you doing this and thinks that all you do is sit around singing karaoke all day...well...that could lead to some issues.

5. "I'll Just Watch One More" Is Something You Constantly Tell Yourself

You may think you're going to watch just one video, but you can't help yourself. The longer you stay on TikTok, the harder it becomes to leave. You'll get sucked into watching all of the recommended videos and then some. And once you've started watching all of these videos, it's really hard to stop because they're so funny or entertaining in some way. At least, that's what we've found with our own experiences using TikTok!

The best part about this whole thing is that everyone can relate to this feeling! No matter how old or young someone is, everyone has had this exact experience when using TikTok at some point in their life--and rightfully so! It's such an addictive app for a reason: there are so many great things about it (like how easy it is on your data), not just bad ones like addiction...so go ahead and give yourself permission to spend more time on TikTok if it makes sense for you!

6. You're Also Really Bad About Going Down the Rabbit Hole

The app is pretty easy to get lost in. You can be on the app for hours, days, weeks, and months. You can also be on the app for years, decades, and even centuries. If you’re lucky enough to live in a place where TikTok isn't blocked, like China or Iran (or if your school does not ban it), you might even find yourself getting sucked into the vortex of Tik Tok videos at some point in your life and never coming back out again.

7. Occasionally, Your Co-Workers Catch You Dancing to a Song That's Popular on the App

Some of you might nod your head and think, "Yeah, I've done this!" And if that's the case, you're probably not alone. If you've ever used TikTok to listen to music on your phone or watch a video with friends, then it's entirely possible that at some point in time, someone has caught you dancing while listening—and they might have even taken a video of it!

And here's something else: You don't even need to be listening to the song for people who aren't using TikTok (or any other social media app) to get on board with the groove. It can happen just by watching others dance. If someone makes a hilarious comment about how great their favorite song is (even if it isn't), others will want in on that fun...and start dancing along as well! This can happen in real life, too—like when someone hears their favorite song come on over speakers during lunchtime at work...

8. You've Defined What Is and Isn't a "TikTok Song."

When you're on TikTok, you hear music. But what is it? Is it a song? Does that mean it has lyrics? What about just instrumental music? Where does the line get drawn between a "song" and something else?

If you've ever used TikTok, you know there's no concrete answer to this question—it depends on who you ask. This uncertainty can be frustrating if you're looking for new music to listen to or are trying to find songs that work well with your videos. You might even wonder if anyone knows what they're talking about!

Here are some guidelines we've found helpful in distinguishing between different types of sound-based content:

  • A "song" is defined by its lyrics (if any) and its melody (if any). If a piece of sound-based content doesn't include either one of these elements but still sounds like something people would want to listen to outside of their video posts, we'd recommend calling it an "instrumental."

  • The distinction between the two terms isn't always apparent; many instrumental tracks do have some melody buried under layers of sound effects or other noise added in post-production after being recorded live by musicians. But if you can still make out distinct words being sung over the top of those instruments, then it's probably safe to call that track some "song."

9. Most of the Memes Make You Laugh Way More Than They Should

If you watch TikTok for long enough, you’ll come across some of the funniest memes. They might be a little annoying at first, but they grow on you after a while.

They also make you laugh way more than they should.

10. But Sometimes, TikTok Posts Can Hit Different

It's not just the social media posts that can hit a little too close to home. Sometimes, even regular old TikTok posts can hit people right in their hearts.

TikTok posts are often silly and lighthearted, but they can also speak to some of the more serious issues plaguing our society today.

Sometimes these videos will have a message that might be depressing or sad, like coming to terms with mental illness or abuse or self-harm or something else like that—but other times, it's just about someone making a joke about themselves or doing something weird on camera. It'll be hilarious because you're watching them do it!

Only people who've used TikTok will understand these struggles!

Only people who've used TikTok will understand these struggles! You've probably had a TikTok problem or spent more time on TikTok than you care to admit. You might even have sung along to the app, no matter where you are. But no matter how much time you spend on the social media platform, there's always something new to learn.

Conclusion

We have to admit that TikTok is one of the most creative and engaging social media platforms out there. It’s addictive, fun, and produces a lot of excellent content. It also has a great way of bringing people together through ongoing challenges or hashtags—a great reminder that social media doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom! You never know when you might turn into a viral celebrity yourself. So get out there and start making your videos!
